Common Water Heater Issues You Should Know About

10/12/2015

As we’ve already discussed on this blog, water heaters are designed to be very sturdy systems. They are subjected to a pretty incredible amount of stress over years of normal use, and they are designed to handle that. However, that does not mean that they are perfect systems. Problems can still crop up from time to time, and it’s important that you know the signs that your water heater is experiencing one of these problems. Read on for some of the more common problems, and their symptoms.

Burner Assembly Issues

This is a broad term that can apply to many different issues with gas-burning water heaters. Without the burner assembly, the gas water heater doesn’t have any way to produce heat. So problems that affect the burner assembly are obviously a big threat to the overall efficacy of the system. Carbon buildup can lead to delayed, and even failed, ignition of the burner assembly. The pilot light could break down, or a gas line blockage could cut off fuel to the system. The biggest symptom of this is simple: you will lose access to hot water. This symptom is not unique, though, as there are other issues with the same one.

Tank Problems

Your water heater tank serves as both the storage and distribution part for your home’s hot water. Issues with the water heater tank could affect either the distribution or the actual heating of the water. For example, a cracked dip tube could leak cold water into the top of the tank, resulting in short bursts of cold water interspersed with hot water. Sediment buildup in the bottom of the tank could act as an insulating agent, shielding the water inside from heat.
