However, there are certain water heater problems that can destroy the system quickly if you’re not careful. Rust

Normally, a storage tank water heater contains a part called the “anode rod.” This metal rod will slowly degrade for as long as it is in the tank, which will protect the system from rust. However, the anode rod will eventually wear down to the point where it can no longer protect the tank from rusting. At that point, the rod needs to be replaced or the tank will start to rust. If the tank is allowed to rust, it can become weakened to the point where it will rupture. This can deal massive water damage to the surrounding area, as well as necessitate that the system be replaced. The best way to prevent this is to schedule annual maintenance to make sure that the anode rod is replaced on time.

Lime Scale

Lime scale is a type of mineral deposit caused by hard water exposure. Over time, it can build up on the bottom of the tank to the point where it actually insulates it from the heat of the burner assembly. If caught early enough, the lime scale can be flushed or scraped out. However, if it is allowed to build up enough it can harden and make it impossible for the water heater to heat properly. Just like rust, lime scale is best prevented by regular maintenance.
